The Community of Wawona
Wawona is a small community located within Yosemite National Park in a mountain valley at approximately the same elevation as Yosemite Valley. Wawona has a historic mountain resort character. The atmosphere is serene and the people friendly. Wawona is convenient to Glacier Point, Badger Pass, and Mariposa Grove, and it is a major access point to the southern portion of Yosemite's backcountry. All visitors entering Yosemite’s south gate pass through Wawona on their way to Yosemite Valley; many pause to walk across the historic Covered Bridge and visit the Pioneer History Center.
In this pleasant historic setting, 19th-century structures and objects from throughout the park have been preserved and restored and are being interpreted at the Pioneer History Center and the Thomas Hill Studio. Schools have been located within Yosemite National Park for over 125 years to serve the needs of park employees and their children. At present, two elementary schools are located within the park, one in Wawona and the other in Yosemite Valley. The Wawona School mirrors the old ‘one-room’ schoolhouse.
Wawona is primarily a community of single family residences with a year-round population of under 160 adults and children. Wawona has an elementary school, athletic field, post office, two grocery stores, library, gas station, and community building. Wawona also has many amenities shared by visitors and residents alike, including a Victorian hotel complex with golf course and restaurant, hiking trails, and swimming in the South Fork of the Merced River.
