Importance of Measure R
"Thank you for supporting Measure R!" - Yes on Measure R Committee
Read below for a better understanding of the why our kids and our community will benefit from this bond measure.
Shortly after World War II, in 1947, baseball icon Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier. That same year, the first classes of kids walked into the then-new Bass Lake Elementary School in the Sierra Nevada foothills. In 1956, American movie princess Grace Kelly married Monaco’s Prince Rainier, the same year that students first entered the brand-new Oakhurst Elementary School.
In the turbulent ‘60s, change was everywhere, and Ford Motor Company introduced its hot new model car - named after a wild horse – in 1964, the same year that teachers and staff at Wasuma Elementary School in Ahwahnee welcomed their first students. As the ‘70s drew to a close, Japanese electronics powerhouse debuted the Walkman, revolutionizing how people listened to music in 1979. That same year, a new middle school opened in the mountain community, Oak Creek Intermediate School.
As we fast-forward to 2006, it’s clear to even the most casual of history buffs that it’s time that attention must be paid to these schools of the award-winning Bass Lake Joint Union Elementary School District, especially to Oakhurst Elementary which has for decades provided a sound educational foundation for a very great number of Eastern Madera County’s youngsters.
Measure R will bring sorely needed improvements to our schools that will do nothing less than ensure that the school district can maintain and enhance quality education for children in our area. The electorate rose to the challenge by passing bonds that made possible the recently completed improvements to our high school - a source of great pride to all in our community. We thank you for not missing the opportunity to come to the aid of the Bass Lake district of which we are equally, justifiably proud. Thanks again for your support. It’s for the kids, for our community, and for our future.
