Welcome OES Families! I hope you and your family are safe, healthy and in good spirits. It's a pleasure to welcome all of you to Oakhurst Elementary School for the 2020-2021 school year. School begins Thursday, August 13, 2020.

The Bass Lake Joint Union Elementary School District is pleased to offer TWO instructional options for you. There is our new and improved Distance Learning Instructional Program OR the Bass Lake Long-Term Independent Study School (BLISS). Per Governor Gavin Newsom's orders, counties on the "watch list" are unable to provide in-person instruction until such time the county demonstrates decreases in Covid-19 cases. Madera County is on the list.

BOTH programs will have children working with their chrome book and receiving classroom instructional supplies. Chrome books will be assigned to ALL students and for those that need one, we will distribute those next week. As such, your child is enrolled in ONE of the following instructional models:

    Distance Learning Instructional Program

This program is "teacher" driven, with students working at home on their chrome book, working with a set schedule. The curriculum utilized includes state adopted materials we have used for several years. This program will emphasize English Language Arts, Mathematics and Social and Emotional learning. The program will also integrate history/social science, art and physical education.

Per Senate Bill 98, the state requires a Distance Learning Instructional Model to include the following:

    • Daily live interaction with certificated employees for the purposes of instruction, progress monitoring and maintaining school connectedness
    • Documentation of daily participation; meaning we take attendance every day, both during teacher directed lessons and independent work
    • Adhere to 180 days of instruction
    • Adhere to daily instructional minutes, for a combined day instruction through both in-person and distance learning (independent work)

To meet the SB 98 requirements, OES is offering an AM/PM Instructional Model providing all the elements listed above. This model will have students assigned to either an AM schedule or PM schedule. When your child is not working with their classroom teacher, your child can and/or will receive support services from our specialists during the opposite block. These services include Special Education (Resource Program and Speech and Language), reading intervention, English Language Learner support, counseling and/or social/emotional support.

Student work will be submitted electronically as we are not distributing paper packets. All work will be graded and recorded for quarterly progress reports.

Bass Lake Long-Term Independent Study Program

This model is "parent" driven as it is a home-school program. The enrollment is for August 13, 2020 to January 15, 2021. Children will be assigned to a BLISS teacher to receive instruction and assignments, working with an on-line curriculum best suited for a home school program. Children in this program will be assigned a chrome book to complete their assignments at home and also receive instructional supplies.

As of now we are in process of updating class lists for the Distance Learning Program, due to the number of students enrolled in the BLISS program. The staff and I are planning to take class lists, and assign half to the AM schedule and the other half to the PM schedule. If, due to your work schedule, you are in need of a particular morning or afternoon schedule, please call the OES office and we will do our best to assign your child to the schedule that bests work for you. On behalf of the staff, I thank you in advance for your patience!

As always, contact the OES office at 642-1580 with any questions. Stay tuned as more information will be coming your way soon on distribution of instructional supplies, class assignments and chrome books!
